College basketball coaches welcome return to Valley Isle for Maui Invitational

KAANAPALI, Hawaii — The Lahaina Civic Center will roar once more.

After two years of pandemic-forced relocation, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational makes its long-awaited return to its namesake island on Monday when eight potent college basketball teams will face off in the intimate confines of a storied 2,400-seat gym.

    • The Maui Jim Maui Invitational college basketball tournament returns to its longtime home after a two-year pandemic hiatus starting Monday in the first round of the 2022 tournament at the 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center
    • Five of eight teams in the field are ranked: No. 9 Arkansas, No. 10 Creighton, No. 14 Arizona, No. 17 San Diego State and No. 23 Texas Tech
    • All four first-round games will be televised on ESPN2 and the remaining winner’s bracket games Tuesday and Wednesday are on ESPN
  • Arizona (2000, 2014) is the only team in the field to have raised the Wayne Duke championship trophy

The event remains one of the premier pre-conference tournaments in the sport, with five of the eight teams in the field ranked in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll.
