Civil Defense message.

This is a Severe Weather update for Wednesday, March 8th at 8:30 in the morning.

The National Weather Service Wind Advisory for all districts of Hawaii Island remains in effect through Thursday.

Sustained winds of 25 to 35 MPH with localized gusts over 50 MPH are forecast.

Hawaii Police Department reports North Kohala District is experiencing utility outages due to downed utility lines along Highway 250 (Kohala Mountain Road). Repair crews estimate restoration to be completed this morning.

The National Weather Service High Wind Warning for the Summits of Hawaii Island remains in effect through Sunday.

Sustained winds of 70 to 90 MPH with higher gusts are forecast for areas above 8,000 feet.

Motorists, please avoid summit roads until conditions improve.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for all west facing shores of Hawaii Island from Upolu Point in North Kohala to South Point in Ka`u from this evening through Thursday. Surf is expected to increase to 10 to 15 feet.

Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers exercise caution and heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.

Beaches may close without notice.
