Tokuda introduces bill to modernize rural health clinic regulations

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda joined colleagues on both sides of the House aisle in introducing legislation that would rescind increased flexibility for rural health clinics and clear away outdated regulations that interfere with their ability to deliver necessary care.

What You Need To Know

    • Tokuda co-introduced the Rural Health Clinic Burden Reduction Act with Reps. Adrian Smith, R-Neb.; Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.; and Kelly Armstrong, D-N.D.
    • An estimated 5,200 rural health clinics provide services in rural and underserved areas across the country. Most operate independently or in affiliation with a hospital with fewer than 50 beds
    • Supporters say the measure is necessary because rural health clinics are subject to unique regulations, some of which have not been updated since the RHC program was established in 1977
  • The bill would remove a requirement that facilities have onsite laboratory equipment. It would also expand the authorized use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants and allow clinics to function as a distant site for telehealth services
