State attorney general Anne Lopez and 21 other attorneys general called on federal Judge Richard Gergel to reject a proposed $10.3 billion settlement with 3M Co. over the PFAS contamination of public water systems across the country.
What You Need To Know
The settlement would be paid over 13 years and the total could potentially reach $12.5 billion based on the results of ongoing PFAS testing ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency
Often referred to as “forever chemicals” for their persistence in the natural environment, PFAS — per- and polyfluorinated substances — are used in nonstick, water-resistant and grease-resistant products like clothing and cookware and fire-retardant foam
According to the coalition of attorneys general, the deal does not give individual water suppliers enough time to determine how the funds would be divided and whether it would cover the costs of remediating systems contaminated with PFAS
