HONOLULU — In its never-ending quest for respect, Chaminade volleyball has made some hard-earned headway.

Longtime coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke took her team to Japan in the preseason, the first sanctioned foreign tour in Chaminade athletics history, with the thought that it would have her group playing to midseason form by the time her team’s first official NCAA matches got underway in Alaska two weeks ago.

What You Need To Know

    • The Chaminade women’s volleyball team was bestowed a No. 20 ranking in the AVCA Division II Top 25 poll this week after the program attained an 8-0 start to the 2023 season, one game off the best start in program history
    • A preseason trip to Japan helped prepare the Silverswords for ranked opponents in their nonconference schedule
    • Coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke has one of her deepest teams, with senior talent from overseas blended with local and U.S. mainland players
  • The Silverswords play three games in the Cal Poly Pomona/Azusa Pacific Crossover tournament near Los Angeles this weekend

The gambit worked. Chaminade was tested by – and lost to – stalwart defensive teams in its exhibition matches in Osaka. It turned around and swept the four matches of the Hawaii/Alaska Challenge and followed that up with four more victories in its Hawaii Invitational at McCabe Gym last weekend to begin the 2023 season at 8-0.
