OHA awards $6M in grants to 17 Hawaiian-focused charter schools

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs will provide $6 million in support to 17 Hawaiian-focused public charter schools over the next two fiscal years, OHA announced on Thursday.

    • OHA trustees approved a $2.7 million Hawaiian Focused Charter School Fund Administration Grant to Kanu o ka Aina Learning Ohana to manage per-pupil funding support for 16 of the schools
    • Earlier this year, OHA awarded KALO a $2.85 million grant to administer a new phase of the charter school grant devoted to supporting unmet facilities’ needs
    • According to OHA, 77% of the more than 4,000 students who attend Hawaiian-focused charter schools are of Native Hawaiian ancestry
  • The funding is particularly significant in the area of facilities since charter schools do not receive any Capital Improvement Project or repair and maintenance funds from the state
