Sandy Beach Park lights turned back on after sea turtles hatch

HONOLULU — Lights on.

Honolulu City and County crews are turning the lights back on at Sandy Beach Park after they were turned off in September to allow for the safe passage of fledgling Hawaiian green sea turtles and seabirds.

The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation said in a news release that federal conservationists confirmed that all of the turtle nests along the shoreline at Sandy Beach hatched in the beginning of November. However, the City waited two extra weeks to turn the lights back to ensure the safety of young seabirds during the new moon period.
