Community: 8-20-24 Police Congratulate Participants of 4th Annual Back to School Keiki Fishing Tournament
The Hawai‘i Police Department’s Hamakua Community Policing Section wold like to congratulate all of the participants who came out to the 4th Annual Back to School Keiki Fishing Derby event held on August 17, 2024 at the Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park.
The event attracted 88 Keiki participants from the Hamakua and North Hilo districts, ages 3-17, competing to catch the biggest fish. The top 3 winners for 6 different age groups received prizes and 2 additional prizes were awarded for most fish caught. All registered participants were treated to lunch, drinks, and shaved ice.
The event has grown in popularity and this year attracted the most participants since the event started 3 years ago. “This was a fun family event that connected Keiki and Police Officers” says event organizers, Hamakua Community Policing Officer Joseph Rocha and School Resource Officer Blake Ragocos.
This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community. We would like to thank the following businesses and organizations: Friends of First Responders, Councilwoman Heather Kimball, Hawai‘i Isle Police Activities League, DARE Hawai‘i, SHOPO, Honoka’a High School Athletic Department, Elite Pumping Solutions, Department of Land and Natural Resources, Downtown Hilo Sack n Save, Fun Factory, Ho Honua LLC, and Waiakea Water.
HI-PAL (Hawai‘i Isle Police Activities League) is a program of the Hawai‘i Police Department in which Police Officers interact with youth in various activities as mentors. This positive connection encourages teamwork, citizenship and responsibility among youth.
