WEAKENED TROPICAL SYSTEM PROMPTS LESSENED RESTRICTIONS IN HAWAIʻI COUNTY

Mayor Mitch Roth is pleased to announce that due to the lower-than-expected impacts from Tropical System Gilma, the Waipiʻo Valley Access Road will reopen to Hawaiʻi Island residents with a valid driver’s license. The road will be accessible under the same stipulations outlined in the Mayor’s Emergency Proclamation, which prioritizes the safety of all valley users.

Residents are reminded that all camping permits issued by the Department of Parks and Recreation remain valid. No closures of beach parks or overnight camping are anticipated at this time. However, as weather conditions can be unpredictable, the County urges residents and visitors alike to stay informed by referring to the County of Hawai’i Hazard Map before making any weekend plans.

“We’re thankful that the forecast is showing better, drier, and safer weather for our island this weekend,” said Mayor Mitch Roth. “However, we know how quickly conditions can change, so we urge everyone to stay vigilant, informed, and focused on safety.”

For those planning activities this weekend, please be sure to sign up for emergency alerts through the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense website to receive real-time updates and information on any changes that may occur.
