HAWAIʻI COUNTY PROVIDES HWY 137 RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE
The Department of Public Works (DPW) announces the upcoming reconstruction of a section of Highway 137, spanning from Highway 132 to Pohoiki Road. This critical project will enhance roadway safety and reliability for our community.
The scope of work includes:
- Grading the existing lava rock.
- Installing a new asphalt concrete pavement structure.
- Removing and replacing asphalt in areas unaffected by lava.
- Installing a new 6-inch waterline.
- Adding roadway signs, striping, and pavement markers.
- Additional miscellaneous tasks to ensure a successful project.
Isemoto Contracting Company, Ltd. has been awarded the contract for this project and received the official notice to proceed on June 24, 2024. The project is on schedule, with an anticipated completion date of March 2026. On-site construction is set to begin at the end of September 2024.
In preparation for construction, surveying and installing Best Management Practices (BMPs) will occur from August 26, 2024. During this period, residents can expect to see work trucks, gravel equipment, and surveying teams in the area.
To mark the commencement of this important work, DPW will host a blessing ceremony for the project’s equipment. The Highway 137 Blessing will occur on Tuesday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Kumukahi Lighthouse entrance (4 Corners) in Pohoiki. All community members are invited to attend this event.
