Road closures for pole replacements
HILO, Dec. 5, 2025 – Hawaiian Electric announces upcoming utility work in north Kona, Ka‘u and Hilo on Hawai‘i Island.
Crews will replace utility poles on the following dates:
- Dec. 11-12 (Kona): Mamalahoa Highway near the Lawai‘a Road intersection will be closed from 10 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, to 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. Motorists are advised to use Kuakini Highway as an alternate route.
- Dec. 17 (Ka‘u): The mauka lane of Hawai‘i Belt Road, between Aloha Boulevard and Iolani Lane in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
- Dec. 18-19 (Kona): Mamalahoa Highway north of Keopu Mauka Drive, between mile markers 6-7, will be closed from 10 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, to 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19. Motorists are advised to use Kuakini Highway as an alternate route.
- Dec. 18-19 (Hilo): West Kawailani Street, between Kimo Street and Ho‘onanea Street, will be closed from 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, to 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19. Motorists are advised to use Haihai Street or West Puainako Street as alternate routes. Residents who live on Mikihala Street will be able to access their homes during the work period when it is deemed safe to do so.
Flagmen will be onsite to provide traffic control. Please plan for possible traffic delays and drive with caution when approaching the work zones.
