The National Hurricane Center Hurricane Warning continues to be in effect as Hurricane Lala causes unprecedented impact and damage to Hawaii Island.
Wind speeds of over 70 MPH are being experienced in Ka`u and forecast to climb higher.
Rainfall averages of 5 to 10 inches have been recorded across Hawaii Island, with multiple areas experiencing 15 to almost 20 inches of rainfall.
Department of Public Works, State Highways, and HECO report a record number of widespread road closures and prolonged power outages.
Conditions have degraded to a point that concern for the safety of our road and power personnel has resulted in crews being asked to fallback until conditions improve.
The National Weather Service forecast conditions to possibly worsen, as Hurricane Lala comes closest to Hawaii Island as it approaches Kau and South Kona Districts this evening and into the night.
Based on these dangerous conditions, the Mayor and Civil Defense request all residents to continue to take cover from Hurricane Lala.
