This is a Civil Defense Hurricane Lala Update for Sunday 08-16-2026

Due to the impact that Hurricane Lala caused on Hawaii Island, please be advised:

Shelters: All public shelters opened on Friday are now closed, with the exception of Na`alehu Elementary School Gym and Pahala Gym in Ka`u District, which will remain open for residents that were severely impacted by Hurricane Lala.

Water: Department of Water Supply has issued a reminder requesting all Hawaii Island customers to cut back on the use of water to “Essential Only”. Click here for information: https://www.hawaiicounty.gov/Home/Components/News/News/4633/720

Power: To assist restoration efforts, HECO is dispatching crews from off island to Hawaii Island. HECO requests your patience as power restoration is projected to be prolonged due to the extreme severity of damage across Hawaii Island.

Government Services: Per Governor Greene’s directive, all county and state offices on Hawaii Island will be closed Monday, including DOE schools.

Park & Recreation: All County Park & Recreational facilities and beach parks will be closed and all facility usage permits for tomorrow are cancelled.

Bus Routes: With the exception of Paratransit Transportation Services, all Hele-on bus routes will remain cancelled tomorrow, Monday.

Report Damage: If you sustained damage or, if you and your household are in need of help, as a result of Hurricane Lala, Civil Defense has a damage report and a Request for Assistance reporting portal on the County of Hawaii website.
