The Hawaiʻi Police Department is investigating a two-vehicle traffic collision that claimed the life of a 45-year-old Ocean View man early Saturday afternoon, August 15, 2026.

At 1:17 p.m., Hawaiʻi Police Department officers responded to a motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lehua Lane in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a gold 2021 Kia Seltos, operated by a 45-year-old man from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, was traveling westbound (makai) on Aloha Boulevard when it crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a silver 2000 Nissan Altima. The Nissan was operated by a 21-year-old woman, also from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

The 45-year-old man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m.

The 21-year-old woman was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation into this crash remains ongoing at this time. It is unknown if the storm played a role in this collision.

This is the 22nd traffic fatality on Hawaiʻi Island in 2026, compared to 14 during the same period last year.
