Acknowledging our contact tracers
Lauren Usagawa, Epidemiological Specialist III
When individuals test positive for COVID-19, contact tracers reach out to them to learn about their family and friends so that they can share information about testing and what they should do the prevent further spread of the disease. Contact tracers help answer questions and stay in touch with these family and friends to see if they develop any symptoms.

Recently, a family member took the time to write a thank-you note to one of the Department of Health’s contact tracers, Lauren Usagawa, Epidemiological Specialist III. The note pointed out that Lauren  “consistently demonstrated innate humaneness and professionalism to our family during this unprecedented time of COVID 19…Lauren has been a reliable liaison to provide up to date information across multiple segments of family members, employers, and our primary care physician(s) to scale an effective plan in coping with COVID exposure. Furthermore, post quarantine steps to safely and confidently integrate back into society and daily life.

“…Immediately, we felt a comfort of assurance that we are in great hands facing sensitive matters. These qualities are un-trainable (teachable), and valued integrity that we appreciate and recognize. Lauren has created an impressionable mark on our family…She also routinely checked in on family members’ physical and mental well-being and managed logistics of food deliveries with the volunteer agency to assist our family during quarantine. Experiencing quarantine ignited anxiety and fear for our loved ones’ health and wellness. Lauren mitigated our concerns, through patience, kindness and guiding us through every inquiry; trust me, we had lots of inquiries and Lauren remained poised and diligent in her work…I am pleased to shine the light on Lauren Usagawa and are grateful for her services.”

Learn what to expect when a contract tracer calls you
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a new wave of scams, many of them targeted at seniors. These scams focus on all areas of vulnerability in an attempt to capitalize on fear and rapidly changing developments. The Department of Health reminds you to be extra vigilant and cautious against fraud, including those posing to be public health contact tracers. To protect yourself and your loved ones, remember that contract tracers will never ask you for your social security number, bank account number, or any financial information.

When you pick up the phone, contact tracers will identify themselves and all information gathered during the contact tracing effort is kept confidential. You may receive a call, text or email. When you are contacted, it is important that you answer or return their call because immediate action is needed.
