Hawaii Attorney General Holly Shikada and her counterparts across the country are reviewing a proposed $3.1 billion settlement with Walmart over the big-box giant’s alleged failure to oversee the dispensing of opioids at its stores.

What You Need To Know

    • The settlement, agreed to in principle by Walmart and lead negotiators from 16 states, would also require Walmart to make significant improvements to its handling of opioids, including oversight to prevent fraudulent prescriptions and the flagging of suspicious prescription
    • The $3.1 billion would be divided by states that sign on as well as local governments and tribes
    • Funds would provide treatment and recovery services to people struggling with opioid addiction
  • The settlement needs the support of 43 states by the end of 2022

“Opioid addiction has taken a terrible toll on too many individuals and families, resulting in loss of lives and years of heartache,” Shikada said. “Going forward, companies that profit from the sale of these prescription drugs must do so responsibly and contribute to the welfare of the community by providing resources to help those in need of opioid treatment and recovery services. This proposed settlement is part of the Department’s continued efforts to help Hawaii’s communities recover from the opioid crisis.”
