Hawaii Island’s new Animal Control Administrator shares long-term goals

HILO, HAWAII ISLAND (ISLAND NEWS) — It’s been half a year since Hawaii County formed its Animal Control and Protection Agency. That’s a whole new division that has county workers doing what the humane society used to do for loose, injured, or unwanted animals.

Island News caught up with Administrator Matthew Runnells on creating this agency from scratch, and how the agency handled the first big fireworks holiday.

“It’s been a little hectic. We’re kind of hitting the ground running. This is a new agency started in July [2023] and so we’re basically starting from scratch and building our staff and our facilities,” Runnells shared.
