Local high schoolers surprise young cancer survivor with Hawaii trip

“It’s his Make A Wish,” said Valerie Frazier, Braxton’s mom. “All these kids got together and did a fundraiser to help with his wish.”

Braxton’s mom Valerie and other family members followed Braxton as students send him on a scavenger hunt. Clues were hidden throughout the school, hinting at a surprise in store.

After battling cancer for almost 10 months, Braxton is now cancer-free. Today was all about showing him love and support. His journey has been a challenging one.

“He was playing ball, and his arm got hurt,” said Valerie. “They said something is just not right. So they sent us to St. Jude’s .”

After much prayer and 32 treatments later, he was sent home.

“All of his tests came back clear, and they sent us home, and they sent us home. So far so good,” she said.

Valerie says Braxton was her rock through it all. “When I wanted to break down, he’s say, no we’ve got this. We’ve got this.”

The last clue led Braxton into the gym where students show their love from the stands. The big surprise was his wish: a trip to Hawaii.

“Wasn’t expecting it,” said Braxton, who said being in the gym was his favorite part of the day.

To the students at Sparkmen, Braxton has a message. “Thank you for everything, and thank you for all the money you donated to Make A Wish,” he said.

Students at Sparkman High raised $11,000 for Make A Wish, which an announcer said at the event happens to be the most any school has raised in Alabama for the organization.
