Registration is now open for our upcoming Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day in the Koai‘a Tree Sanctuary on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Journey with us as we deepen our knowledge of Kohala Mountain’s natural and cultural landscape, and further our kuleana (responsibility) as hoa‘āina (caretakers of the land) to help restore and regenerate Kohala’s native forests—the source of our precious water.
The Koai‘a Tree Sanctuary is home to numerous native dryland species such as ‘a‘ali‘i (above), koai‘a, and ‘ōhi‘a. We can help our native plants thrive during the dry season of kau by watering, weeding out invasives that inhibit growth and increase wildfire risk, and collecting seeds to propagate seedlings to restore our native forests.
The Koai‘a Tree Sanctuary is a special place on leeward Kohala Mountain filled with a variety of native dryland forest plants. On this Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day, the mahina (moon) will appear overhead as Kūkahi, and while this is typically an excellent moon phase for planting trees, we will focus on helping our native kin grow and thrive through kau (dry season) by weeding and watering previously planted outplantings, maintaining and improving trails, collecting ‘a‘ali‘i seeds to start seedlings for future plantings, and removing invasive species like fountain grass. We will also visit and share knowledge about some of our native friends who reside in the Sanctuary like koai‘a, ‘a‘ali‘i, and ‘ōhi‘a, talk story about our sources of water, and engage in kilo, the Hawaiian practice of environmental observation.

We host Hoaʻāina Stewardship Days to strengthen our pilina (relationship) with Kohala Mountain and our environmental kin. Stewardship activities include kilo, seed collection, invasive species removal, and trail maintenance.
