Registration is now open for our next Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day on Saturday, March 19, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Journey with us as we return to the Koai‘a Corridor to deepen our knowledge of Kohala Mountain’s natural and cultural landscape, and further our kuleana (responsibility) as hoa‘āina (caretakers of the land) to help restore Kohala’s native forests—the source of our precious water.

The Koaiʻa Corridor is a 243-acre riparian forest restoration area encompassing Luahine and Waiakamaliʻi streams. Koaiʻa Corridor reforestation is an ongoing project initiated in 2009 by the State of Hawaiʻi, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Natural Area Reserves System, facilitated by private landowner partners of the Kohala Watershed Partnership, Parker Ranch, and Queen Emma Land Company, and supported by hundreds of community stewards. Together, we have outplanted various native species throughout the Corridor, totaling more than 60,000 plants!

PLEASE NOTE: This Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day requires participants to hike about 5/8ths of a mile uphill, so it is best suited for guests in good hiking condition. We will hike up at a leisurely pace and take breaks, though! We’ll meet as a group on Kohala Mountain Road at 8 a.m. and hike up and back together. For those unable to participate, we invite you to sign up for future events that are less physically demanding.

This Hoa‘āina Day falls the morning before Piko o Wākea (the spring equinox), providing us with an exciting opportunity to kilo (keenly observe) what’s happening in our environment—and ourselves!—as ka lā (the sun) prepares to cross the Equator into the Northern Hemisphere and our days become longer than our nights. Māhealani, one of our mahina piha (full moons), will have just set and will guide our stewardship activities as we deepen kinship with place and our sources of water, sharpen our kilo skills, and plant and mālama (care for) koai‘a, ‘a‘ali‘i, ‘iliahi, and other members of our forest ‘ohana.

We host Hoaʻāina Stewardship Experiences to strengthen our pilina (relationship) with Kohala and our environmental kin. Stewardship activities are coordinated based on ancestral knowledge, observed conditions, and needs expressed by ‘āina itself, and often include planting, kilo, seed collection, invasive species removal, trail maintenance, and watering.

Space is limited and reservations fill up fast, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible. Sign up online or call us at 808-887-6411. Details on where to meet and what to bring will be provided in an email upon completion of registration. For more information, please contact Mahina Patterson at mpatterson@kohalacenter.org or 808-887-6411.

Deepen pilina with the landscapes of Kohala’s Cloud Forest and share in mālama ‘āina (care for the land) in this moku we call home.
