Registration is now open for our next Hoa‘āina Stewardship Day in the ahupua‘a ‘o Kawaihae on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.! Journey with us as we meet the dryland and mesic forests and riparian corridors of the ahupua‘a at Keawewai, ‘āina gifted to The Kohala Center in 2014. We will plant native forest species, kilo (observe and monitor) our restoration trial plots, and learn together, strengthening our connections to ʻāina and each other as an ahupuaʻa-stewarded community.
Our Hoa‘āina Stewardship Experiences in the Ahupua‘a ‘o Kawaihae take place at Keawewai, ‘āina stewarded by The Kohala Center in Kawaihae Uka. With the help of the community, we are propagating native seedlings to restore Kohala’s dryland and mesic forests and riparian corridors, strengthening pilina ma uka to ma kai as an ahupuaʻa-stewarded community.
Community members of all ages are invited to join our free Hoa‘āina Stewardship Experiences. These guided, half-day learning journeys are designed to deepen our pilina (relationships) with Kohala’s natural and cultural landscape, create space for meaningful exchanges between place and people, and share in mālama ‘āina (care for the land) in this moku we call home.
Through kilo and hana (work), Keawewai continues to reveal who, how, when, and where we plant to regenerate native forest. With the completion of our nursery, we are able to propagate native plants for Kawaihae in Kawaihae, and are noticing an increase in the rate of growth of some of these plants as compared to lā‘au ‘ōiwi (native plants) we used to grow in nurseries outside of the ahupua‘a.
Face masks will not be required, but participants are welcome to bring and wear them. Space is limited and reservations can fill up fast, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible. Sign up online or call us at 808-887-6411. Details on where to meet and what to bring will be provided in an email upon completion of registration. For more information, please contact Kaimana Chock at kchock@kohalacenter.org or 808-887-6411.
