Maui County issues Stage 2 water shortage starting Nov. 8

KAHULUI, Hawaii — The Maui County Department of Water Supply says it will advance the Stage 1 water shortage to a Stage 2 water shortage in the Upcountry area on Nov. 8 due to low surface water flow amid ongoing drought conditions caused by the lack of rainfall, according to a news release.


What You Need To Know

    • Per the County Code, the advance to a Stage 2 water shortage requires Upcountry consumers to stop using water for nonessential activities such as irrigation, watering lawns and washing vehicles
    • Residents who use water for nonessential purposes could face a fine
    • According to Water Supply Director John Stufflebean, daily water demand is currently exceeding the supply by 20%
  • The NOAA’s winter forecast indicates there will be less rainfall for the wet season of October through April 2024

The East Maui Watershed services Upcountry residents and farmers from Haiku to Kanaio, covering Makawao, Upper and Lower Kula, Haiku, Pukalani, Kokomo, Kaupakalua, Ulumalu, Ulupalakua, and Kanaio.
