$75 million in federal funds secured for the Board of Water Supply to deal with contaminants

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Health, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, secured up to $75 million for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

    • The Honolulu Board of Water Supply will be increasing monthly water bills over the next five years as a result of the Red Hill water crisis, general inflation and changes in the way people use water
    • The BWS is also seeking to recover $1.2 billion from the U.S. Navy for costs associated with its response to the Red Hill water contamination crisis
    • The Hawaii Department of Health secured up to $75 million in federal funds for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply
  • In a letter, DOH suggested the BWS use the new federal funding to bring the Halawa Shaft back online. The Halawa Shaft was closed by the BWS two years ago as a precaution after the fuel spill at Red Hill
