The big chair really isn’t all that different, Jesse Nakanishi swears.

But, the new Hawaii Pacific University men’s basketball coach allowed, “It was great not having a referee tell me to sit down now.”

HPU is off to its best seven-game start since 2016-17, when it won its first 12 games en route to a 29-3 season and a PacWest Conference regular-season championship. After two season-opening losses in Fairbanks, Alaska, the Sharks (5-2) have won five straight and on Monday were named the PacWest Team of the Week.
