* WHAT…East winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. * WHERE…Portions of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island Hawaii. * WHEN…Until 6 PM HST this evening. * IMPACTS…Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high profile vehicles.

Instructions

Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

…RED FLAG WARNING FOR LEEWARD AREAS OF ALL ISLANDS UNTIL THIS EVENING… .The combination of low relative humidity, and strong trade winds will bring critical fire weather conditions for leeward sections of the state. Minimum relative humidity levels are forecast to reach critical thresholds for a few hours from late morning through the afternoon. * AFFECTED AREA…Leeward areas of all islands. * TIMING…Conditions are forecast to reach critical threhoslds for a few hours today from late morning through the afternoon. * WINDS…East 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY…Minimum humidity levels from 42 to 45 percent. * IMPACTS…A combination of strong winds, and low relative humidity can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. A Red Flag Warning does not predict new fire starts.

Instructions

Outdoor burning is not recommended. Heat from vehicle exhaust systems can ignite dry grass. Park cars on areas that are paved or where vegetation is trimmed and cleared. High winds contribute to wildfire hazard. Delay activities that could throw off sparks until the wind dies down.
