Official Report: Big Island Scrap Metal 16-168 Kalara St Keaau, HI 96749 Industrial Fire

Vehicle compactor crushing a car sparked the scrap pile.
At scene, E-5 arrived and found fire contained to a scrap metal pile. Co. 3 requested for additional manpower. E-5 personnel extended two 1 3/4″ preconnect attack lines for initial suppression. Water supply was then secured from fire hydrant across the street and the deck gun was used for heavy suppression. Fire was brought under control and heavy equipment operators from BISM used 3 excavators to dig up and open the pile to reach the seat of the fire till extinguishment. HPD personnel closed down Kalara St during suppression activities and assisted with notification of nearby businesses of smoke hazard. All units cleared upon fire extinguishment and no injuries were reported.
Found approx 50’x50’x12′ pile of scrap metal and large tires on fire and about 75% involved. Pile was under a covered, open steel metal building. All employees were accounted for and out of the area. Fire was contained to the pile.
