Utility work for grid hardening in May
Overnight road closures along Mamalahoa Hwy. in Kona
HILO, April 23, 2025 – Hawaiian Electric crews will replace 11 wood poles along Mamalahoa Highway in Kona on Thursday evenings from May 1-30. The overnight work will be done in sections and require a road closure from 10 p.m. on Thursday to 4 a.m. on Friday while the work is being performed.
The pole replacements and upgrades are some of the many actions that Hawaiian Electric is taking to strengthen the grid and minimize fire hazards as part of its Wildfire Safety Strategy.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and to drive with caution if approaching the work zone. Flagmen will be onsite to provide traffic control.
Some work will require a temporary power outage while the work is being performed. The company will notify impacted customers in advance.
