Hawaiian Electric to share details of Waiau Repower Project at community meeting

HONOLULU — Hawaiian Electric invites the public to learn about the details regarding its plan to repower the Waiau Power Plant in Pearl City at a community meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Waiau Elementary School at 98-450 Hookanike St.

A livestream will also be available on Hawaiian Electric’s Facebook page.


What You Need To Know

    • Hawaiian Electric says the project to repower the Waiau Power Plant will strengthen resiliency and contribute to the state’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045
    • The company proposes to reuse the existing infrastructure to avoid new land development and reduce cost and community impact
    • As the old generators are decommissioned, the new CT units will be installed in pairs so that there will always be power feeding Oahu’s electric grid
  • In addition, Hawaiian Electric seeks feedback on its 253-megawatt project that includes a “community benefits package” providing $3,000 per megawatt, per year, to community programs once the project is up and running
