Elaine Yaeko Sumida, 76, of Hilo, died March 3, 2023, at home. Born in Kohala, she was a retired school teacher and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Buddhist Women’s Association and Hui O Wahine FCE. Friends may call at 3:30 p.m. March 20, 2023 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers. She is survived by son, Derek (Jennifer) Sumida of New York; daughter, Carie Sumida of Honolulu; brother, Larry (Hattie) Kanda of Pearl City, Oahu; three grandchildren, numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
