HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is experiencing a partial network outage that started just before 8:20 a.m. HST on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Despite this partial outage, data coming into HVO are sufficient to allow us to detect major changes at Hawaiian volcanoes.
The data outage is related to removal of electronic and IT equipment from the old HVO building on Uēkahuna bluff.
HVO staff are currently assessing the problem and working on possible solutions. Restoration of data streams could take hours or days due to the complexity of the problem. Meanwhile, users of the HVO web site will notice gaps in seismic and other data until the issue is resolved.
HVO continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes closely. We will continue to issue updates on a regular schedule.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is one of five volcano observatories within the U.S. Geological Survey and is responsible for monitoring volcanoes and earthquakes in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa.
