WATER QUALITY ADVISORY ISSUED: HILO
Chlorination System Failure at Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant
The County of Hawai‘i Department of Environmental Management reports an estimated 607,000 gallons of non-chlorinated secondary treated effluent was discharged from the Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant, approximately between 8:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024.
The cause of the failure was determined to have occurred when the chlorine was being replenished. Restoration of the system was completed at approximately 12:30 p.m.
The Department of Health was notified and issued a water quality advisory for Hilo Bay outside of the Hilo breakwater.
