Mamerto Sarmiento Macanas Jr., 82, of Kapaau died Sept. 22 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for the former Kohala Sugar Co., retired from the Hawaii Army National Guard and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi and Local Boys kupuna softball team. Private services. Survived by daughters, Lorna Collins of Alaska and Tammy Macanas of Las Vegas; brother, Rudy Macanas of Keaau; sisters, Florence Adones of California, Linda Naihe and Carol (Lester) Ching of Kohala; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
