HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT
On Friday, December 16, at 6:47 a.m. HST, a magnitude-4 earthquake occurred 19 mi (31 km) SSW of Hana, Maui, at a depth of 8 mi (13 km) below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes.
This earthquake is probably related to a crustal readjustment related to Haleakalā volcano and is not related to volcanic activity.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
