U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, secured nearly $64 million in new federal funding for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and Schatz’s office announced Tuesday.

According to HART, the funding will be used to cover inflationary cost increases and comes in addition to Federal Transit Administration funding already committed to the project
HART executive director and CEO Lori Kahikina said the funds will “further enable HART to meet its obligations under the Recovery Plan and achieve our construction milestones”
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said he was “extremely grateful” to Schatz for getting the extra funds
The FTA approved the city’s latest rail recovery plan without modification in October, clearing the way for an infusion of federal funds that will eventually total $744 million as the project hits designated benchmarks
