Ellen Hayako Kato, 92 of Hawi died Nov. 22 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Hawi, she was a 1949 Kohala High School graduate, attended the former Honolulu Business College for secretarial courses, was a travel agent and utility clerk at the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union in Kona, where she was honored as “Employee of the Year” in 1999 and “Big Island Chapter Employee of the Year” in 2000, member of the Kona Business and Professional Women’s Organization and practiced and taught ikebana at Kona Hongwanji. Private services. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by son, Glenn K. (Denise) Kato of Puyallup, Wash.; daughter, Arlene N. (Simon) Kato of San Francisco; brothers, Clyde Sugiyama of San Jose, Calif., and Roy (Agnes) Sugiyama of Waipahu, Oahu; sister, Jane Kawazoe of Hilo; three nephews and four nieces.
