 KILAUEA VOLCANO WARNING !

This is a Civil Defense Kilauea Eruption Update for Thursday 04-09-2026 at 04:07 PM.

Episode 44 began today  at 11:10 AM HST. Strong south winds are forecast to carry ash and Pele’s hair northeast into Hilo and Hamakua Districts.

The National Park Service has the Park closed and the Police Department have Highway 11 closed between the 25.5 Mile Marker and 40 Mile Marker until tephra fall subsides.

A cloud of volcanic gas and particles is visibly making its way northeast across east Hawaii.

During this period, if you haven’t yet done so and you are downwind;

Avoid touching or coming into contact, or breathing tephra dust.

Minimize tephra entering your home and vehicle by keeping windows and doors closed.

Keep pets away from tephra where possible.

If you have a catchment water system and are downwind, disconnecting the tank can help reduce tephra entering your water system.
