Kahaluʻu Bay Rest Period for Cauliflower Coral Spawning
Friday, May 1 – Sunday, May 10
From May 1–10, Kahaluʻu Beach Park will observe a rest period to honor this natural process and reduce disturbance during this sensitive time of coral reproduction. This pause helps protect newly forming coral and supports the long-term resilience of the reef.
During the rest period, our team will continue kilo and in-water observations, deepening our understanding of these natural cycles while maintaining a respectful presence in the environment.
How you can support:
- Please stay out of the water during the rest period
- Avoid standing or walking on reef areas year-round
- Use reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen or wear protective sun clothing
- Give all marine life space
- Help share this message with your ʻohana and visitors
Mahalo for your continued care and stewardship of Kahaluʻu.
Hoaʻāina Stewardship Day: Kahaluʻu (RESCHEDULED)
Saturday, June 13 from 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
Due to the Kona Low storms in March our Hoaʻāina Stewardship Day at Kahalu‘u Bay and Beach Park has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 13, 2026.
We will focus on deepening our connection with the wahi pana of Kahalu‘u and Hawai‘i’s coastal environments as hoaʻāina—friends of the land and loving caretakers—through our four ‘āina stewardship practices. You’ll learn about Kahaluʻu as ʻāina lei aliʻi, the lands that adorn the chiefs, and what has made Kahaluʻu so special for generations. We’ll engage in kilo, or intentional observation along the shoreline or in the water. (Please bring your snorkel gear if you’d like to participate in the in-water activity!) And we’ll share a moʻolelo (oral history) of Kahalu‘u and collectively create a mo’olelo of the day as a form of knowledge transmission and reciprocity.
Registration opens Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Space is limited and reservations tend to fill quickly. Event details will be provided prior to the event. For more information, please contact us at info@kohalacenter.org or 808-887-6411.
