Kohala Obituary 2/5/2020
Sylvester “Sonny” Haiha Paalua Jr., 89, of Kawaihae died Feb. 5 at home. Born in Puuanahulu, he was a retired Pohakuloa Training Area heavy equipment operator, U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and National Guard veteran, and member of American Legion, Kohala National Guard Alumni, Kohala Senior Citizens, Na Kupuna O Kohala, Moku O Keawe Outrigger Canoe Racing Association and Na Kalai Wa‘a Makalii Kupuna. Visitation 8-10 a.m. Saturday (March 7) at Kalahikiola Congregational Church in Kapaau. Memorial service at 10 a.m. Luncheon to follow. Casual attire. Another service 2-7 p.m. at Kailapa Kawaihae Hawaiian Homes Community Center. Survived by daughters, Nalani Okubo of Kawaihae, Colleen (Scott) Henne and Elsie (Eric) Dela Cruz of Kohala, Jan Paalua and Miulan Paalua of Kawaihae; son, Ryder (Darcy) Paalua of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Ann Mills, Helen Sing and Rose Coit of Kohala; sisters-in-law, Margo Gonsalves of Oakland, Calif., Lillian Naihe and Daisy Naihe of Hilo, Linda Naihe of Kohala; brother-in-law, Herbert Naihe of Honolulu; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
