Schatz secures $64M in additional rail funding

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, secured nearly $64 million in new federal funding for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and Schatz’s office announced Tuesday.

    • According to HART, the funding will be used to cover inflationary cost increases and comes in addition to Federal Transit Administration funding already committed to the project
    • HART executive director and CEO Lori Kahikina said the funds will “further enable HART to meet its obligations under the Recovery Plan and achieve our construction milestones”
    • Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said he was “extremely grateful” to Schatz for getting the extra funds
  • The FTA approved the city’s latest rail recovery plan without modification in October, clearing the way for an infusion of federal funds that will eventually total $744 million as the project hits designated benchmarks
