HELCO power update
Update….6:30am HELCO RECORDING…a few more hours.
Update for December 16th, 2018:
Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) reports a down power line off Kohala Mountain Road near the 4-mile marker (just outside of Waimea) and is currently the cause for a large outage in North Kohala district and upper Kohala Mountain Road area. HELCO is currently working to get crews to the area to begin repairs.
Hawaii Fire Department reports that a brush fire in the same area is related the down power line up off of Kohala Mountain Road. Crews are at this time staged in the area and awaiting HELCO officials to de-energize the power lines in the area so they can begin to extinguish the brush fire.
Currently, there are no road closures at this time and may change without notice. So we advise motorist to please avoid the area until further notice. Also at this time, there are no evacuation orders in place for surrounding residences in the area at this time, but be prepared to evacuate at a moments notice should one be ordered.
It’s an ongoing incident and we will provide updates as they become available.
