Christina Kishimoto, state schools superintendent, asked parents and guardians to remain flexible and to check the state Department of Education’s website for updates as Tropical Storm Olivia hits the islands.

State public education officials say after-school activities on Hawaii island will resume on Tuesday because the threat of Tropical Storm Olivia on the island has diminished in the latest forecast.

On Maui, however, all after-school activities and Hana High & Elementary School will remain closed Tuesday. All other schools will be open statewide on Tuesday.

The Department of Education says if Maui officials activate evacuation shelters at schools, those schools will need to be closed. Check Maui County’s website for information.

Those who attend charter schools are asked to contact their schools directly to learn about closures, or visit the Public Charter School Commission’s website, which listed Connections Public Charter School in Hilo as closed Tuesday.

Updates will also be provided via the DOE’s social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook.

Also, University of Hawaii officials said that UH-Maui Hana Education Center will be closed Tuesday until further notice because of Olivia.
